01. When can I apply?

Applications for the Loan Scholarship will be open every year from December/January onwards.

02. What is the eligibility for the Loan Scholarships?

To be eligible for the Loan Scholarship, an applicant must:

  • Be an Indian national
  • Be below 45 years of age as on 30th June, 2020
  • Have a graduate degree from a recognised Indian university and have secured at least 60% in their last academic examination
  • Candidate can also apply even if they are at the beginning of the second year of overseas studies (Postgraduate/PhD/Post Doctoral/Research Fellowships). This is applicable only if the minimum duration of course is 2 years. Scholars who have already been awarded the loan scholarship cannot apply again for the same course.
  • Could be in the final year of graduation or awaiting results
  • Have secured admission or awaiting admission to pursue Master’s /M.Phil./ PhD / Postdoctoral studies / Research fellowships studies abroad.

03. Can I apply even if I do not have confirmed admission?

Yes, you may apply even if you do not have confirmed admission from the universities you have applied to.

04. What is the loan scholarship?

The scholarship is offered at a simple interest of 2% per annum. However, if students repaid the loan within the specified time period (between the end of 3rd and 7thyear), the Trustees may waive the interest.

05. What is the maximum loan amount you offer?

The amount awarded as the loan scholarship ranges between Rs.1,00,000/- and Rs.10,00,000/-. All applicants do not necessarily qualify for the maximum amount.

06. Is there any gift awards also?

Yes, the selected scholars may also be recommended for a gift scholarship based on their overseas academic performance and partial travel assistance from our allied Trusts as may be decided at the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. A gift scholarship can be for a maximum amount of Rs.7,50,000/- and the travel grant can be a maximum of Rs.50,000/-.

07. Do you ask for any collateral security?

We do not insist on any collateral but applicants must have a guarantor. This is mandatory.

08. Where can one obtain the application form?

The application forms are available online on our web site.

09. Can the application be filled in online?

Yes, Candidates have to create a login ID and password to be able to apply. Please note that you may create only one Login ID using your email ID. You may directly complete the application form online in one visit or more than one visit but you must remember to save the draft before you exit each time. You may preview the application before submitting it.

10. Do you have any format for the Statement of Purpose (SoP)?

Statement of Purpose (SoP): The most important point to note is that the Statement of Purpose is NOT a Personal Statement, which means that candidates must avoid biographical references. The SoP, specifically addressed to the “Trustees of the J N Tata Endowment”, an academic document and should ideally address the following questions, while written in candidates’ own words, between 500 and 800.

Yes, candidates are required to mention the recommender’s details in the specific column provided for it in the application form. The LOR should be mailed from recommender’s official email I.D. and not from personal email I.D.Recommender may be a Professor of the college or university where the candidate is studying OR the Employer, in case the applicant is / was working. The LOR should be specifically addressed to “The Trustees of the J. N. Tata Endowment”, should be mailed to jnte@tatatrusts.org in the following format:-

  • What is your course and why you have chosen it?
  • Are you continuing your undergraduate stream or moving to a new stream? If new, what explains the change?
  • What are your expectations from the postgraduate programme?
  • Do you have any experience in the chosen field? How?
  • If you already have the experience, what additional skills do you hope to gain?
  • How does your programme fulfil your needs and interests?
  • What are your career plans?

Candidates are advised to stay as close as possible to the above structure of SoP. Candidates guilty of plagiarism will be found out and summarily disqualified.

11. Do you need a letter of recommendation (LoR) and is there any specific format?

Yes, we need a LoR which can be written by a Professor of the college or university where the candidate is studying OR the Employer, in case the candidate is / was working. The LoR should be addressed to “The Trustees of the J. N. Tata Endowment”.LoR has to be submitted online by the recommender the instruction for candidates & recommenders are available with application form.

12. Are any documents required while submitting the application form?

Only the SoP and LoR. All scanned copies of the required documents are must be submitted at the time of the interview.

13. Can I update my application form at the later stage?

Yes, you can update the status with the Endowment through email.

14. How and when will I get the status of my application form?

Candidates who are selected for the next level are intimated over email between March and June. All the Awards will be announced together by the first week of July by email.

15. When are the interviews held?

The interviews are held between April and June.

16. Are the candidates reimbursed for their travel and accommodation for the scholarship interviews?

The candidates are not reimbursed for their travel and accommodation for the scholarship interviews. Candidates also have an option to take the interview through Skype by providing their skype ID and recent photograph.
